India Eyes Simultaneous Elections: A Two-Stage Plan
One Nation, One Election? Committee proposes plan for synchronized national, state & local elections in India! Aims to streamline governance & save costs
A high-level committee proposes a roadmap for synchronized elections in India. This aims to:
- Improve governance
- Reduce election costs
- Minimize disruptions from frequent polls
The plan involves two stages:
- Stage One: Align Lok Sabha and state assembly elections through a one-time adjustment of state assembly terms.
- Stage Two: Integrate local body polls (municipalities & panchayats) within 100 days of unified national & state elections.
This may require amending the Constitution to allow a common electoral roll and single voter ID card.
