Where Do You See Yourself in 5 Years

Five years is a long time-frame in which a lot of growth and achievement can happen at the individual as well as the industry level. This is indeed the right time to join the fray as the trajectory of growth maintains a steep curve and it is likely to remain so in the future as well. If you are serious-minded with oodles of talent, the sky is the limit for you. In just five years.

OPUS has seen the rising fortunes of many talented design pass-outs in a very short span of time. This is a field where creativity is respected and very much in demand. Exceptionally creative minds are able to establish themselves very quickly. In less than five years, they are talked about in the industry circles and rival companies show a keen interest in their work. The question is whether you have a clear idea of where to reach and how to reach in your career. When you appear for a job interview, you should have a faint idea of where you wish to see yourself five years down the line.

If you join at the junior-most level, you can climb the ladder pretty fast. In three years, you can occupy a senior position, with bigger responsibilities of leading a team. The young generation does not like to waste years languishing in the same position. They want to grow fast and they are ready to put in their best for that. Such enterprising professionals break barriers and ceilings and we see many of them holding commanding positions in large companies where merit matters more than years of experience. Your contribution to the project is assessed along with your preparedness to take on bigger roles. As a result, the potential to earn gets doubled and trebled. Are you one such designer who is ready to surprise the recruiters with talent and performance? Is your portfolio so impressive that the employer wants you to stay employed with the company for long and contribute handsomely to company growth?  Think how it aligns with your broader professional goals.

Employer expectation

Apart from being inquisitive about your career plan, they are keen to find out some basics about you: Have you given adequate thought to your career? Are you determined or do you still need initiative? Do your aspirations match with those of the company? Express that you are eager to excel in the role being offered and would like to continue growing within the organisation. Strike the perfect balance between over-ambitious and realistic. While you do not want to undersell your capabilities or appear as a weak-willed person lacking in drive, you also do not intend to project yourself as a ruthless go-getter who would claw the way to reach the acme.

Honest approach

If the distant future appears unclear to you and you have no clear idea where you will be in the next five years, then do not resort to lying or clichés. You need to communicate that you do have a sense of direction. You may want to emphasise that you are very much open to opportunities that come your way and would welcome career training and advancement they offer. Progress in the field and see yourself in senior roles. This position gives the chance to sharpen skills and develop new techniques to achieve progress. Take on more responsibilities in the process to make constructive contributions to the team that helps the company attain more success. Something of this kind regarding your five-year plan might interest employers to rope you in for the prized designer job that shapes your future really well.

OPUS extends best wishes to all for making a grand fortune armed with a degree in design!
