NID DAT Vs NID DRT – What’s The Difference?
Nowadays, many students are choosing the field of fashion and design for their careers. If you are an aspiring student to pursue a career in Design, then you should know the NID DAT and DRT difference. Both DAT and DRT exams are conducted at the national level to enrol in the National Institute of Design (NID). NID was established in 1961 at Ahmedabad which has now grown into a multi-campus institute with different campuses at Bengaluru and Gandhinagar also. Its mandate is to provide world-class design education and promote awareness about the design industry. Â
What Is NID DAT?
NID DAT stands for Design Aptitude Test which is conducted by NID to assess the candidate’s creative skills and design aptitude. The NID DAT exam is for students who aspire to get admission to NID in undergraduate and post-graduate design courses. Talking about the NID Design Aptitude Test exam, it covers two stages namely DAT preliminary and DAT mains. The DAT Preliminary exam evaluates the creativity, drawing skills, colour and composition, problem-solving skills, and visualisation abilities of candidates.Â
The NID DAT Preliminary exam for undergraduate programs is based on pen and paper with 26 textual and visual questions carrying 100 marks. Undergraduate level DAT Preliminary exam gives a maximum time limit of 3 hours. However, the NID DAT Pre exam for post-graduate programs is online and based on a mix of subjective and objective questions. Postgraduate level DAT Pre exam gives a maximum time limit of two and a half an hour. In both cases for graduate and postgraduate levels, the medium of the DAT exam is English only.Â
Shortlisted candidates go to the next level for the DAT Mains exam which includes a studio test and interview. In the case of the B.Des (Bachelor of Design) course, the DAT Mains comprises a Studio Test while for the M.Des (Master of Design) course, the DAT Mains exam includes both a Studio Test and a Personal Interview. In the designated window, candidates who are shortlisted for the DAT Mains will need to upload their portfolio and Statement of Purpose (SoP). The National Institute of Design will notify the candidate via the registered email ID and result page of the specific time/ window for uploading SoPs and Portfolio. Candidates who are shortlisted for a discipline must post their portfolios and statements of purpose individually.
What is NID DRT?
NID DRT stands for Design Research Test which is conducted by NID to give you an opportunity to pursue PhD in Design course available in both part-time and full-time mode. The NID DRT exam is for those who have completed their master’s degree in design from a recognised institute. To apply for NID DRT, candidates must have successfully completed NID’s PGDPD, AEPEP, or five-year SLPEP Diploma in Design. The full-time mode of the PhD program covers three years of time and candidates who are pursuing the same will get a stipend for three years. A stipend of Rs. 25,000 per month in the first year and Rs. 30,000 per month in the second and third years will be provided to those who enrol for the full-time PhD programme. For candidates who spend more than three years in their PhD study, the stipend amount will expire.Â
Talking about the NID DRT, the Design Research Test covers three stages namely shortlisting of applications, DRT, and Personal Interviews. In the first stage, the candidates’ proposals and the qualifying requirements are taken into consideration while shortlisting applications. The content of the proposal will be assessed in terms of its potential for study as a whole, appropriateness, compatibility with NID’s research objectives, and plagiarism. Shortlisted candidates go for the next level DRT which is held at the NID Gandhinagar and NID Ahmedabad campus. After clearing the NID DRT exam, the interview round takes place.Â

Exam PurposeÂ

However, NID DRT helps candidates to enrol themselves for pursuing PhD program in NID.Â
Exam Pattern
NID DAT comprises two stages namely preliminary and mains exam. For B.Des and M.Des programs, the maximum time limit is varied with different exam patterns. DAT Mains exam includes a Studio Test for B.Des and a Studio Test and Personal Interview for the M.Des course. However, NID DRT has three stages including shortlisting applications, DRT written test and Personal Interview. Â
