NIFT Application Form 2027: Everything You Need Before You Click “Apply”

Last updated: 10 October 2026 · By the OPUS Design Admissions Team

The NIFT 2027 application form is expected to open in the first or second week of December 2026 on the NTA portal, exams.nta.nic.in/niftee, with the entrance exam likely in the first half of February 2027. NTA has not released the 2027 information bulletin yet, so every date below is projected from the official NIFT 2026 and 2025 schedules — and we will update this page the day the notice is out.

Quick answer — NIFT Application Form 2027

  • Where to apply: exams.nta.nic.in/niftee (online only)
  • Expected opening: December 2026
  • Expected last date: early-to-mid January 2027 (late fee window of 3–4 days after that)
  • Application fee (2026 rates): ₹2,000 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS, ₹500 for SC/ST/PwD; ₹3,000 / ₹750 to apply for two programmes
  • Late fee: ₹5,000 extra
  • Age limit (B.Des / B.FTech): under 24 years on 1 August 2027 (5-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD); no age limit for Masters
  • Expected exam date: first half of February 2027 (GAT on computer, CAT on paper)

If you are a Class 12 student aiming for a B.Des at NIFT Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru or Kolkata, the form is the easiest part of the process to get right — and also the easiest to get wrong. One wrong programme choice, a blurred photograph or a missed deadline can cost you a full year. This guide walks you through every field.

NIFT 2027 Important Dates (Expected)

The NIFT 2027 registration window will most likely run from early December 2026 to the second week of January 2027. We have projected the 2027 dates from the last two official cycles, shown side by side so you can see the pattern.

OPUS tip: NTA extended the 2026 deadline twice, but do not plan around an extension. Students who apply in the first week avoid server slowdowns, payment-gateway failures and the ₹5,000 late fee. Set a reminder for the first week of December 2026.

NIFT Application Fee 2027

Most applicants will pay ₹2,000 for one programme, if NTA keeps the 2026 fee for 2027. That 2026 fee was itself a cut: General-category candidates paid ₹3,000 for one programme in 2025.

  • Payment modes: debit card, credit card, UPI or net banking (2026 gateways: Canara Bank and ICICI). Bank processing charges and GST are extra.
  • NRI / Foreign National / OCI / PIO / SAARC: ₹11,100 for UG or PG programmes.
  • Non-refundable: the fee is not returned under any circumstances, so confirm your eligibility before paying.
  • Confirmation page: your form is complete only when the confirmation page generates after payment. No confirmation page = no admit card. Download it and keep 2–3 printouts.
  • Payment failed but money deducted? Contact the bank/gateway helpline first. NTA refunds duplicate payments after reconciliation, so you may pay again to secure your form.

The only place to submit the NIFT 2027 application is NTA’s portal: exams.nta.nic.in/niftee. The link goes live on the day NTA opens registration; until then it shows the previous cycle.

Beware of fake links. NTA does not accept forms by post, email or WhatsApp, and no agent can “secure” a NIFT seat. If a site asks you to pay anywhere other than the NTA portal, close it.

NIFT 2027 Eligibility & Age Limit

To apply for B.Des or B.FTech you must have passed (or be appearing in) Class 12 and be under 24 on 1 August 2027. Masters programmes have no age limit. The rules below are from the 2026 bulletin; NIFT rarely changes them year to year.

ProgrammeQualification
B.DesClass 12 (any stream) from a recognised board, NIOS with 5 subjects, a 3/4-year AICTE diploma, or IB / A-levels
B.FTechClass 12 with Mathematics, or a 3/4-year engineering diploma
M.DesClass 12 with Mathematics, or a 3/4-year engineering diploma
MFMUG degree in any discipline, or a 3-year UG diploma from NIFT/NID
M.FTechB.FTech (NIFT or any 4-year), or B.E./B.Tech

Class 12 students appearing in 2027 board exams can apply. You must produce your pass certificate at admission. A born-on-or-after date check: for B.Des 2027, you should be born on or after 2 August 2003 (General category).

Can I apply for both B.Des and B.FTech? Yes, if you studied Maths in Class 12. Choose the combined option on the same form and pay the two-programme fee. You will sit GAT Section A + B and CAT, and get separate merit ranks for each programme. The same works for MFM + M.Des at the PG level.

Lateral entry (NLEA), Artisan quota and NRI seats have separate eligibility and timelines. NRI/foreign applicants are admitted on SAT, GMAT or GRE scores (minimum 50%), not the NIFT exam.

How to Fill the NIFT Application Form 2027: Step by Step

The form has three stages — register, fill and upload, pay — and you can save and finish them in separate sittings. Budget 30–40 minutes with your documents ready.

  1. Open the portal. Go to exams.nta.nic.in/niftee and click “New Registration”. Read the Information Bulletin first; NTA treats non-compliance as grounds for disqualification.
  2. Register (Step 1). Enter your name, mother’s and father’s names and date of birth exactly as on your Class 10 certificate, in capitals, with no prefix (no “Ms.” or “Mr.”).
    • Use your own email ID and mobile number. They cannot be changed later, and every NTA update goes there.
    • Create a password of 8–13 characters with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number and a special character (!@#$%^&*-). Note your Application Number.
  3. Fill the application (Step 2). Log in with the Application Number and password, then add:
    • Programme: B.Des, B.FTech, or both (B.FTech + B.Des needs Maths). This choice cannot be changed after the correction window.
    • Category (Open / Open-EWS / OBC-NCL / SC / ST / PwD) — also final once submitted.
    • Four exam cities in order of preference, from your state of permanent or present address.
    • Exam medium (English or Hindi), educational details and full postal address with PIN code.
  4. Capture a live photo and upload documents. Switch on your webcam (or scan the on-screen QR with a phone), then upload your scanned photo, signature and, if applicable, PwD/UDID certificate.
  5. Pay the fee (Step 3). Pay via card, UPI or net banking. Keep the transaction ID and a screenshot.
  6. Download the confirmation page. Save the PDF and print 2–3 copies. Without it, your form is incomplete and no admit card will be issued.

Documents, Photo & Signature Specifications

The photo and signature are where most NIFT forms get flagged, so match these specs exactly.

UploadFormatFile sizeRules
PhotographJPG/JPEG10–200 KBRecent, colour, white background; face covers 80% of the frame, both ears visible, no mask, cap or goggles (regular spectacles allowed); no Polaroid or edited photo
SignatureJPG/JPEG10–30 KBFull running signature in blue/black ink on white paper; your name in capital letters is rejected
ID proof (if not verifying via Aadhaar/DigiLocker)JPG/JPEG10–200 KBClearly legible
PwD / UDID certificate (if applicable)PDF50–300 KBClearly legible

Keep ready before you start:

  • -Class 10 certificate (for name and date of birth spelling)
  • -Class 12 marksheet, or “result awaited” details
  • -Aadhaar, PAN, passport or any government ID number
  • -Category certificate — OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be issued on or after 1 April of the admission cycle (1 April 2025 for the 2026 cycle)
  • -Your own email ID and mobile number
  • -6–8 copies of the same passport photo — you will paste it on the exam-day attendance sheet
  • -Card, UPI or net banking for payment
NIFT 2027 Exam Pattern & Selection Weightage
The programme you tick on the form decides which tests you sit and how your rank is built. For B.Des, half your final score comes from CAT, the drawing paper — which is why practice for it should start well before the form even opens.

Paper (B.Des)ModeDurationQuestionsWhat it tests
GATComputer-based2 hours100 MCQs: English 40, Quant 20, Analytical & Logical 15, GK & Current Affairs 25Aptitude, language, reasoning, awareness
CATPen and paper3 hours3 design/drawing tasksObservation, concept, colour and illustration
Situation TestHands-on, at a NIFT campus-Build a 3D model from given materials + English write-upSpace, material use, construction, finish

Marking: +1 for each correct GAT answer, −0.25 for each wrong answer, 0 for unattempted. B.FTech candidates sit a 3-hour GAT of 150 questions (Section B adds Quant, Analytical and a case study). Tie-breaks for B.Des go to the CAT score first, then GAT.

Correction Window, Exam Cities & Mistakes to Avoid

Correction window. NTA opens a 2–3 day online-only window after the late-fee deadline (20–21 January in 2026). Edits by email, post or WhatsApp are never accepted, and nothing can be changed after the window closes. Your category, PwD status, email and mobile number should be treated as permanent from the moment you submit.

Exam cities. The 2026 exam ran in 100 cities, including Kolkata, Siliguri, Durgapur and Asansol in West Bengal and Bengaluru, Mysuru and Mangaluru in Karnataka. You pick 4 cities from your own state; NTA may allot a nearby city for logistical reasons, and the allotted city cannot be changed.

The 8 mistakes that cost NIFT aspirants a year:

  1. Submitting two forms for the same programme — all of them get rejected.
  2. Choosing only B.Des when you studied Maths and could have added B.FTech for ₹1,000 more.
  3. Using a parent’s email or phone number, then missing the admit-card alert.
  4. A name that doesn’t match your Class 10 certificate or the photo ID you carry on exam day.
  5. A selfie-style or edited photo, or a photo where your ears aren’t visible.
  6. Typing your name in capitals in the signature box.
  7. Stopping after payment without downloading the confirmation page.
  8. Choosing the wrong category — if you claim a reserved category without a valid certificate and take any relaxation, your candidature is cancelled.

After you apply: watch for the city intimation slip, then download the admit card (early February). On exam day, GAT is a computer-based test in the morning and CAT a pen-and-paper drawing test in the afternoon — carry your own colours in a transparent pouch. Shortlisted B.Des candidates take the Situation Test in April.

Filled the Form? Now Make the Next 120 Days Count

From mid-October to exam day is roughly 120 days; from the day the form opens, only 8–10 weeks remain. That is enough time to move your CAT score meaningfully — if your practice is reviewed by someone who has sat on the other side of a design portfolio.

At OPUS (theopusway), NIFT and NID aspirants train in batches capped at 5 students, with mentors who include design professionals and an IIT Bombay M.Des. Every CAT sketch and Situation Test model gets individual feedback, and GAT is taught the way top test-takers think about it.

The NIFT 2027 form is expected in December 2026 on exams.nta.nic.in/niftee. In 2026 it opened on 8 December 2025; in 2025 it opened on 22 November 2024.

The regular deadline is expected in the first or second week of January 2027, followed by a 3–4 day late-fee window. NTA will confirm the exact date in the 2027 information bulletin.

If 2026 rates continue, it is ₹2,000 for General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates and ₹500 for SC, ST and PwD candidates for one programme. Applying for B.Des and B.FTech together costs ₹3,000 or ₹750.

The late fee is ₹5,000, charged on top of the regular application fee.

You must be under 24 years on 1 August 2027, with a 5-year relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates. There is no age limit for M.Des, MFM or M.FTech.

Yes, but only during NTA’s 2–3 day online correction window. No changes are accepted after it closes or through email, post or WhatsApp.

The exam is expected on a Sunday in the first half of February 2027. NIFT 2026 was held on 8 February 2026 and NIFT 2025 on 9 February 2025.

No. NTA does not refund the fee once paid, except duplicate payments, which are refunded after reconciliation.
