What is the New 5.5-Year Integrated M.Des Pathway?

The most significant update for undergraduate design aspirants is the introduction of the 5.5-Year Professional Education Master of Design (Integrated Pathway).

• Direct Master's Route: Class 12 pass-outs can enter directly into a Master’s trajectory across 15 specialised design disciplines at NID’s premier campuses—Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Bengaluru.
• B.Des vs. Integrated M.Des: Traditional 4-year B.Des programs continue at NID Andhra Pradesh, NID Assam (Jorhat), NID Haryana (Kurukshetra), and NID Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal), alongside the flagship integrated cohorts.

Eligibility Criteria & Age Limit for NID 2027

1. For B.Des / 5.5-Year Integrated M.Des:

Academic Qualification: Passed or appearing in 10+2 (Higher Secondary) in any stream (Science, Commerce, Arts, or Humanities) from a recognized board (CBSE, ISC, State Boards, IB, etc.).

Age Limit (Born on or after):

General / Gen-EWS / Overseas: Born on or after 1 July 2006.

OBC-NCL / SC / ST: Born on or after 1 July 2003 (3-year relaxation).

PwD Candidates: Born on or after 1 July 2001 (5-year relaxation).

2. For M.Des (2.5-Year Master of Design):

Academic Qualification: Bachelor’s degree of minimum 3-year or 4-year duration in any specialisation, or a full-time Diploma in Design.

Age Limit: General category candidates must be born on or after 1 July 1995 (relaxations apply as per category guidelines).

NID DAT Exam Pattern & Selection Stages

The NID admission funnel involves two competitive phases:

Stage 1: DAT Prelims (20 December 2026)

CDAT / CAT (Design Aptitude Test): Subjective, hands-on sketching, perspective drawing, spatial observation, creative lateral thinking, and 2D/3D visualization.

GAT (General Aptitude Test): Objective multiple-choice questions assessing visual reasoning, design awareness, cultural history, and analytical logic.

Note: DAT Prelims serves as the qualifying gateway to shortlist candidates for DAT Mains.

Stage 2: DAT Mains (Studio Test & Personal Interview)

Studio Test / Sensitivity Test: Hands-on model making, material handling, observation exercises, audio-visual analysis, and 3D prototyping.

Personal Interview & Portfolio: Review of portfolio concepts, personal design philosophy, and observational sketchbooks.
